Pirates claim left-hander Dumatrait

Former Reds left-hander Phil Dumatrait was claimed on waivers Friday by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 26-year-old Dumatrait was 10-6 with a 3.53 ERA in 22 starts at Triple-A Louisville this year. He made six starts for the Reds after being called up in August, going 0-4 with a 15.00 ERA and while allowing 30 earned runs in 18 innings.

A first-round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2000, he sat out the 2004 season after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery. He pitched 145 games in the minors before being called up by Cincinnati.

To make room for Dumatrait on their 40-man roster, the Pirates assigned catcher Carlos Maldonado outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
